News: STR^NGE Return With Ambitious New Single ‘Crying Shame’

Liverpool-based risers STR^NGE return with their most emotionally raw and theatrically ambitious new single ‘Crying Shame’.

Swapping the beguiling alt-rock of previous releases for a more Arctic Monkey’s ‘The Car’-esque whimsical feel, ‘Crying Shame’ is a personal, intimate track that reflects on lead vocalist and songwriter James’ past struggles with drug addiction.

Produced by Amelia Danby at Kempston Street Studios, with co-production from Chris Taylor (Miles Kane, The Coral, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds), ‘Crying Shame’ marks a bold stylistic shift for the band. Gone is the fuzzy, guitar-heavy grit of earlier material; in its place is a dramatic, piano-led arrangement, complete with sweeping strings and a waltzing time signature. The influence of artists like Tom Waits and Nick Cave is evident, as STR^NGE lean into a moody, cinematic sound that blends 70s alternative flair with unflinching lyricism.

Crying Shame is about my time in university where I became addicted to drugs,” says James. “I felt terribly down and filled my days with heroin, ketamine and benzodiazepines, and it’s a wonder that I was able to write this song at all. Each line is rooted in reality. I knew the track had to have contrast, so punctuating those lyrics with a waltzing time signature felt like the most natural thing to do. I didn’t want to lose the emotional effect of the song through the contrast however, so adding that sweeping string section really keeps the vibe of the tune grounded and doesn’t let it give way to the ridiculous.”

Formed by Chrissy, former drummer of The Mysterines, alongside James, David, and Leon, STR^NGE have built their sound on a foundation of sonic nostalgia and modern experimentation. With influences ranging from David Bowie to Talking Heads, their music creates a listening experience that is both familiar and refreshingly unpredictable.

With ‘Crying Shame’, STR^NGE step into a more vulnerable and theatrical phase of their evolution, offering a song that’s not only musically daring but also deeply human.
